Real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (rt-fMRI) has become a widely spread and commonly used modality in functional MRI research. One of its applications, namely neurofeedback (NF), has also gained popularity in the neuroscience community. It enables to use the MRI scanner in a brain-computer interface (BCI) fashion by providing an online neural feedback to the scanned subject. More generally, neurofeedback allows the subject to exert and further learn a volitional control on his own brain activity. Neurofeedback training is intensive in time and personal investment, as the long-term goals are ultimately behavioral changes leading to clinical improvement.
We are collaborating on a large multicentric clinical study on chronic tinnitus using rt-fMRI neurofeedback (NeuroTin). In the scope of this study, we are looking for a motivated intern (student) to assist and help during the interactive MRI sessions with our clinical participants. The position will be supervised and offers an opportunity to learn - hands-on - about the real-time fMRI setup and the MRI facility of Campus Biotech in Geneva, as well as the imaging and processing techniques used in fMRI. Ultimately, the intern will have the responsibility to carry out the fMRI recordings (always with another person) on his/her own at the MRI facility and be part of an interdisciplinary team of researchers, from EPFL and the Wyss Center, jointly located at Campus Biotech (Geneva, Switzerland).
This position is paid by the EPFL standards (TA rate, 24 CHF/h) and open to any motivated EPFL MSc student. Position starts as soon as possible (January 2019). Not eligible for academic credits.
- Enrolled as a MSc student at EPFL (or attach proof if about to be enrolled)
- Strong command of MATLAB; a plus : Python/Java
- Commitment to a weekly but sometimes variable schedule according to participants’ availabilities
- Available on a regular basis : min 4h/week on spot, min 4 months; desirable : min 6h, min 6 months
- Willingness to learn to operate the rt-fMRI software (MRI safety training will also be provided)
- C1 or equivalent in French and English; a plus : Italian or German
