For the second time, the Swiss Dyslexia Association awarded prizes at this year’s conference for original projects in schools and classes to promote dyslexia and dyscalculia-friendly teaching, as well as a prize for innovative research in the field of dyslexia and dyscalculia.
The research prize is awarded to the best research article on dyslexia and/or dyscalculia in which a researcher of a Swiss research institution has acted as first author of a scientific publication and/or as project leader. The work must not be older than two years (deadline).
Silvia Marchesotti received the VDS Research Award 2021 for her work “Selective enhancement of low-gamma activity by tACS improves phonemic processing and reading accuracy in dyslexia”, which was published in the renowned scientific journal PLoS Biology in 2020. The scientific excellence of the work is demonstrated among other, by the fact that Silvia and her team succeeded in showing a causal relationship between gamma oscillations in the auditory cortex and phonological processing and, furthermore, that short-term, non-invasive stimulation by tACS in adults with dyslexia leads to a normalization of oscillations and has a positive effect on both phonological skills and reading accuracy. The chosen approach therefore seems to be particularly promising to improve future therapies for people with dyslexia.
